Join us as we guide you through this island retreat, showcasing its year-round appeal and the unique combination of attractions that make Xlendi a must-visit.
About Xlendi
Xlendi is located along Gozo’s southwest coast, situated between the neighbouring villages of Kercem, Munxar, and Fontana. Once a small Gozitan fishing village, it has now evolved into a bustling seaside town lined with several nearby hotels, bars, and restaurants offering lunch and dinner experiences with amazing views of Xlendi Bay.
Most of Xlendi’s charm is found in its beautiful, azure waters, creating the perfect setting for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxing. Surrounded by lush greenery and towering cliffs, Xlendi also offers rugged pathways in the valley and scenic points where you can enjoy stunning sunsets.
Interestingly, Xlendi boasts historical value with tombs dating back to Punic-Byzantine times scattered around the cliffs and the valley. Romans strategically utilised the sheltered port of Xlendi, benefitting from the cliffs that shielded the bay from high winds. The reef has witnessed several shipwrecks, leaving Roman amphorae on the seabed.

Things to Do in Xlendi
Swimming at the Small Beach and the Rocky Areas
You’ll find various swimming entry points at Xlendi Bay. The small, sandy and pebbly beach with azure waters is great for families and travellers seeking shallow spots to enjoy a swim and soak up the sun.
Meanwhile, the rocky coastline on the left side of the bay is ideal for snorkellers and divers seeking a more adventurous experience in deeper waters.
The Coastal and Xlendi Bay Cliff Walk
Besides swimming, Xlendi is a popular choice for enjoying walks along the coast. Needless to say, the breathtaking views of the dramatic cliffs and the beach create a perfect backdrop for your journey. As you head from the beach towards the tower, Xlendi Valley, also known as Il-Kantra, adds an extra layer to your seaside exploration.
Xlendi Tower
The Xlendi Tower was commissioned in 1650, during the reign of Grand Master Lascaris. Impressively, it is the oldest among four free-standing coastal watch towers in Gozo that served its purpose in defending the surrounding area and warding off pirates, smugglers, and quarantine invaders. It was recently restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa and Munxar Local Council, and was eventually inaugurated and opened to the public in 2023.
This historic structure is easily accessed on foot from the main bay on a 5-10 minute walk. Cross the stone bridge over the lovely inlet of Il-Kantra to reach the tower, a testament to Gozo’s rich history.
L-Għar ta’ Karolina
On the right side of the bay, the cliff sides are adorned with caves, among which L-Għar ta’ Karolina (Caroline’s Grotto) stands out. Accessible by stairs along the cliffside, this cave is quite significant since it was donated by Caroline, a wealthy lady from Rabat, to the Augustinian sisters she founded. The sisters used the cave as a private retreat during their swims. Another renowned cave on the right side is the Catherine of Siena Cave, located right under Ta’ Klula cliffs, famous for its clear blue water.
Snorkelling and Diving at Xlendi Beach
With its array of reef formations, rocky coastline and beautiful underwater landscapes, Xlendi Beach is a paradise for beginner and advanced diving enthusiasts. Amongst the highlights, you’ll find unique diving spots like the Xlendi Tunnel and Xlendi Reef, both teeming with marine life, as well as the Xlendi Underwater Archaeological Park, showcasing wrecks from old times into the beauty of the bay’s reef formations.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church
Don’t miss visiting the iconic Mount Carmel Church, also known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, during your time in Xlendi. This religious site holds importance and is a must-visit for those exploring Xlendi.
Attend the Xlendi Village Festa
One of the main events that takes place in Xlendi is the famous traditional feast celebrated on the first Sunday of September. This annual event in Xlendi brings together vibrant elements such as band clubs, decorated streets, stalls selling traditional local food, and stunning fireworks in the evening, symbolising the lively spirit that characterises celebrations throughout Malta.
Il-Ġostra: A Traditional Local Game
A unique activity is the traditional “Il-Ġostra”, a thrilling spectacle where participants compete for a trophy attached to a greasy pole strategically set up like a plank at the water’s edge. Whether it’s an act of daring or bravery, make sure to catch a glimpse of this unique local game when you visit Xlendi Bay.
Xlendi Mill
Constructed in 1955, the Xlendi Mill was cut into the cliffs behind the church, featuring an entrance tunnel. The mill comprises a large chamber divided into three floors, housing the grinding and milling tools. Despite the effort invested in its construction, this impressive mill, with its entrance tunnel and multi-floor chamber, unfortunately, never saw operational use.
